3 Steps to Better Leadership

3 Steps on How to Be a Better Leader & Communicator.  Whether you’re an Executive Chef leading a fully staffed kitchen, a Celebrity Chef who’s constantly in the media, or a culinary student looking to ace their first job interview, how you present yourself is crucial to your success in a world that strongly emphasizes communication and teamwork.  In the Food & Beverage and Hospitality industries, learning how to control the way you are perceived is invaluable.  Chef’s Roll member Rachel Hanfling, a producer for Oprah Winfrey, Anderson Cooper, and speaker at Harvard University, shares 3 powerful tips on how to become a more effective communicator and leader.  Remember, “Presentation is Everything”. (Photography by Rob Forsythe)

#1.  Meet people where they are to take them where you want them to go.

In order to connect with your audience (one person or millions), you need to understand what is most important to them. Then, authentically connect the points of your story, restaurant or product to what your audience cares about.

#2.  Simple is smart.

Sometimes people feel the need to show all their knowledge when they speak, but the smartest thing you can do is simplify. You can always go deeper, but if you don’t talk to people in terms they understand first, you can’t connect and succeed.
For instance, you may be the world’s greatest sommelier, but if you describe wine in terms I don’t understand, you’ve lost me. However, if you talk to me in a way I understand, I will return to your restaurant or watch you on TV.

#3.  Practice outside your circle.

Most of us share our ideas with people inside our circle. These are our friends, colleagues and people who know us or think like us. This is normal, however if you want to enhance your communication, start sharing your ideas with folks outside your circle and see if they understand you, are interested and take action on whatever you are pitching. If they don’t, keep honing your message until they do. If you don’t know who to talk to, perhaps my blog can help. I look forward to “seeing” you there!
