September 14, 2020 Update:

The registration period has now closed. Due to the ability of the sample provider (Spiceology) to ship samples more quickly than anticipated, we have “sped up” the schedule. We are expecting samples to arrive by the end of this week. The entry deadline will now be October 4th, and other dates will be adjust accordingly.

October 2, 2020 Update:

Submission deadline has been extended to October 19th. We understand many of you have not received samples, and Spiceology is looking into this. If you do have samples, please still submit your recipe asap!

November 02 Update:

Due to the issues that arose during the shipping period, we have been forced to delay the winner announcements until November 13th. Thank you for your patience.

Good luck to all competitors!

You know what these chefs have in common? They’re giving up the use of salts and fats (for just a short time) to try to help 37 million Americans with kidney disease.

You have the gift of creating great flavor and sharing it with the world.  But you’re used to being able to leverage two key ingredients to enhance and impart flavor in your dishes: salts and fats.

Imagine a world where salts and fats were not allowed, because eating them could mean the difference between living or dying. That might sound extreme, but it is the truth for many with kidney disease.

Bottom line, most home cooks don’t know how to develop great flavors from scratch. And, for those faced with a kidney restrictive diet, it’s even harder. Many give up on their restricted diets before they even try. And, not staying on their diet can literally cost them their lives.

That’s where Spiceology comes in. They’ve always been known for quality ingredients and flavor innovation, and they recently created 13 innovative, flavorful, salt-free blends designed to help consumers on restricted salt diets. And they formed a partnership with the National Kidney Foundation to help promote healthier eating for kidney patients who need to dramatically reduce salts and fats in their diets to help mitigate the impact of kidney disease.

Chef’s Roll has partnered with Spiceology to take it one step further. We’re introducing the “Life-or-Death Recipe Challenge,” a contest unlike any other we’ve put together. How? No salt. Low fats. And the meal needs to be something the average person can create quickly in their own kitchen. But, most importantly, it must be delicious!

Our goal is to come up with 370 healthy, delicious and simple to make recipes – one recipe for every 100,000 Americans with kidney disease (have we mentioned that 37 MILLION Americans are impacted?).

Join chefs Jeremiah Tower, Dakota Weiss, Jean-Paul Bourgeois, Stephanie Hamilton, Lawrence Duran, Earl Gray, Tim Hollingsworth, Brad Kilgore, Chad Minton, Jet Tila, Isaac Toups, Chad White and many more who are all ready to throw down for kidney patients!

How It Works

  1. US-based chefs – register below for the opportunity to compete in the “Life or Death Challenge.”
  2. If you’re selected, Spiceology will send you 1 oz samples of each of their 13 blends along with a 4-5oz container of the blend you are most interested in.
  3. Once you receive the samples, do what you do best and “experiment with flavor” to create a healthy, flavorful dish without using salts or extra fats.
  4. Upload your recipe and a hi-res photo of your dish to a link that will be provided, and post it on Facebook or Instagram, tagging Chef’s Roll and Spiceology, and using #lifeordeathrecipe
  5. Every entry that’s selected will be included in an eCookbook of salt-free and low-fat dishes that will be made through Spiceology.com. Recipes that pass the National Kidney Foundation’s CKD diet certification will be made available on the National Kidney Foundation website as well. Each will include a photo of you, your bio, the recipe and a photo of your amazing dish.

Due to limited supplies, preference will be given to Executive Chefs or other roles with the ability to make or influence decisions within foodservice operations.

This is for the 37 million Americans who have kidney disease, and the 1 in 3 adults in America who suffer from hypertension and high blood pressure. Thank you,  Chef, you can make a real difference — you can literally use your craft to help save lives.
