Zak the Baker  |  Miami

Upon walking through Zak the Baker’s technicolor doors, you are immediately engulfed in the aroma of freshly baked sourdough bread and immersed into a minimalist, funky setting with the friendliest staff ready to take your order.

The master baker behind the bakery is Zak Stern, who was a recent semifinalist for the honorable James Beard “Outstanding Baker” 2017. Zak the Baker was first established in 2012, with a series of delicious, organic and certified kosher sourdough breads like Olive & Za’atar, Jewish Rye, and Walnut & Cranberry that were available at restaurants throughout Miami and select farmer’s markets.

Since then Stern opened a store front in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood back in 2014 and a glatt-certified kosher deli just a block away from the original bakery opened early 2017, where it is said to have better corned beef sandwiches than anywhere in New York City.

Even with Zak’s fame, he likes to be understated and subtle for his accomplishments as an artisan baker. You can always find him at the bakery and present every Friday at noon when 200 loafs of challah are released to a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd waiting to take at least two loafs home for their day of rest.

Zak the Baker has become a respected place not just for its great bread and amazing deli, but for celebrating and keeping tradition alive.
