On September 21st, 2015 Chef’s Plate, the ultimate traveling cooking competition, headed to the SoCalGas Food Service Equipment Center in Los Angeles. Chef Freddy Vargas of Scarpetta competed against Chef Perry Cheung of Phorage in front of a panel of esteemed judges and an audience of the culinary who’s who of LA. Judges included Chef Brian Huskey, Chef Chris Crary, Chef Dorian Southall, Chef Joe Arvin, and food writer/Eater LA senior editor Farley Elliott. Guests enjoyed a networking happy hour with craft beer from Duck Foot Brewing Company, cocktails by Nolet’s Gin, and charcuterie by Creminelli. Renowned photographer Josue Castro also took complimentary chef portraits.
In a very tight race, Chef Freddy Vargas was crowned both “People’s Choice” and overall champion of Chef’s Plate 5. He took home the Chef’s Roll trophy, a Golden Ticket to compete in the World Food Championships for a chance to win $100,000, a custom knife by Aura Knifeworks, and a commemorative bottle of Nolet’s Gin. Both contestants got gift bags from Made for Chefs.
